Michael O’Hanlan, CEO of R. M. O’Hanlan Consulting, has been meeting the accounting needs of the Washington, DC area for over 20 years. His expertise covers commercial, not-for-profit, and government contractor accounting, as well as business advisory, tax, and fraud examination.
He earned a B.A. in Russian Language from Michigan State University and a Master of Arts in Slavic Linguistics from the University of Virginia. While in graduate school, he followed his intuition and began training in accounting at Piedmont Community College. Shortly thereafter, he completed an Associate of Science in Accounting from Northern Virginia Community College.
RMOHC is built on years of working with various companies, equipping O’Hanlan with skills in commercial, not-for-profit and government contracting sectors. He developed a reputation for tackling “disaster accounting” challenges creating order out of chaos. This included a short engagement with KPMG, a “big four” accounting firm.
As a Senior Advisory Associate at KPMG, he used his background in accounting, teaching, and training to help explain complex government accounting issues to senior agency officials. Through this experience, he discovered the importance of advisory services, which are now key elements of all his offerings.
He became a Certified Fraud Examiner after collaborating with the Fairfax County Forensics Team. What began as a routine accounting cleanup for a client’s finances led to O’Hanlan uncovering thousands of dollars in embezzlement and payroll fraud. Fairfax County investigators used his forensic research to secure a$264,000 felony conviction against an office manager of a small home services company. O’Hanlan is now a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and a member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE). O’Hanlan is also a Certified QuickBooks® ProAdvisor in both Desktop and Online editions. He is dedicated to providing his clients with financial peace of mind and empowering them to manage their finances accurately, profitably, and legally.
